The Minister of Finance and Economy, Mr. Ervin Mete, the Mayor of Tirana, Mr. Erion Veliaj, and the Director of KfW in Albania, Mrs. Brit Horschke, signed the Financing Agreements for the Green Transport Project in Tirana for a loan of EUR 50 million provided by the German Government through KfW Entwicklungsbank and a grant of EUR 31.2 million provided by the Western Balkans Investment Fund (WBIF). The total estimated cost of the project is € 110.37 million. The remainder of the financing, amounting to € 29.17 million, will be provided by the Municipality of Tirana.

The project includes the implementation of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system using battery-electric buses on three lines in Tirana (Unaza, Tirana e Re, Kombinat-Kinostudio). The aim of the project is to improve public transport services and reduce CO2 emissions. This will contribute to climate and environmental protection and improve energy efficiency.

The project aims to:
– Provide a long-term, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution at an acceptable cost compared to other high-capacity systems.
– Improve and extend the public transport network, making it more user-friendly and more efficient.
– Reduce environmental pollution;
– 20% reduction in travel time;
– Increasing the speed of travel on the new transport routes thanks to dedicated lanes and an adequate management system.

The project is part of a series of measures taken by the government to achieve sustainable development and climate change objectives and is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
